We are excited to launch the brand-new Our Sporting Journey book series, created in collaboration with British Gymnastics.
Our Sporting Journey is a collection of interactive books designed to place children at the heart of their sporting experience. The series supports their development both in and outside the gym, encouraging them to fully engage with their sporting journey as they progress through the early stages of growth.
The series includes three age-specific versions – up to age 5, ages 6–7, and ages 8–9. Each book is carefully tailored to reflect the experiences gymnasts are likely to encounter at each stage.
Each book is packed with engaging activities for children, while also encouraging positive interaction between them, their parents or carers and their coaches. Parental involvement is a key part of the journey, whether that’s having meaningful conversations, playing together at home, or helping to add photos and memories. Together, these moments create a lasting memory book that families can enjoy for years to come.
At the youngest ages, parents play a hugely influential role, with their support and role modelling forming a vital part of a child’s sporting journey. Collaborating closely with children is essential, and throughout the books there are plenty of activities and discussion prompts to ensure they remain at the centre of their own gymnastics experience.
Gordon MacLelland, CEO of WWPIS added:
- “Michael Gerard, the brains behind the concept, and I saw a real opportunity at the youngest ages to bring everyone onto the same page about how we develop young people in sport. We wanted to be proactive to do more to help clubs, coaches, parents and young people work effectively together, creating a better springboard for development.Over the years, many organisations have asked us to create electronic versions of these resources. But we’re firm believers in getting young children off their screens and communicating with their peers and the adults supporting them, so we’ve deliberately stuck to that principle.”
Claire Murray, Head of Strategic Content & Campaigns at British Gymnastics added:
- “Working With Parents in Sport understand how important it is for parents and carers to play an active role in their child’s gymnastics journey, which is why we are delighted to launch these interactive books as an extension of the work we have been developing together. The Our Sporting Journey books help parents and carers start meaningful conversations with their children in a relaxed and enjoyable way, giving them the confidence and support to navigate their experiences in and through gymnastics.Alongside celebrating achievements, the books include engaging activities that encourage children to reflect on and share what they enjoy, what they hope to achieve and where they may need help. Through colouring, drawing and adding pictures, children can personalise their gymnastics journey while strengthening positive relationships with those supporting them.”
