Finding the right sporting opportunities for your child can be a tough task for parents. Which sport will they enjoy most? Which club is best suited to their needs? How do you consolidate costs and time constraints with the quality of the event?
Not too long ago, word of mouth and newspaper ads were your only aids. Now parents have the internet, but that is still something of a minefield – after all, it is the quality of a club’s coaches and facilities that matter most, not that of their website and marketing department.
At Hoops Connect, we’ve had our own problems with sourcing quality sport sessions. When our founder Jonas moved here to study in 2010, he didn’t know anyone he could play basketball with, and he had no way of advertising games that he set up.
So we’ve created an app that will be a god send for anybody looking for sports and fitness events – especially parents.
All you do is download Hoops Connect to your phone and create a profile stating where you live and which sports you are interested in. Once that’s done, you have all the events in your local area at your fingertips. It’s completely free, and it will stay that way. It really is that simple. But let me tell you how it works.
There are two sides to Hoops Connect, each with different functions, “organise” and “participate”. It works along the same lines as Uber and Airbnb.
Organisers use the app to create their events. This centralises all of the usual problems that come with running sports clubs – managing payments, using waiting lists and internal group chats to avoid drop outs and making events recurring to cut down on hassle.
Once those events are created, they appear on the map on the home screen for participants as an event pin. As more of those events are created, the community on Hoops Connect grows giving participants greater and greater choice and variety.
As a parent, you can set your profile to filter the sports you want to find for your children, find events in your local area, talk directly to the organisers to find out any details that aren’t advertised on the app and pay there and then.
All that’s left is for you to turn up with your child and watch them have fun.
Since our release earlier this year, we’ve populated the app with hundreds of events in Manchester, Birmingham, London, Wales and Yorkshire – and we have plans to grow that community in the near future.
Among them are a number of events specifically for children, including dance classes, gymnastics, running clubs and team sports.
We really think that we can make a significant impact on sport in this country. And with a database of local events within a couple of taps of your finger, we think that we could make the lives of parents everywhere so much easier.
But don’t take our word for it! Search for Hoops Connect on the app stores to try our app for yourselves. It’s completely free, so there really is nothing to lose.
